Description

Freelancers are the lifeblood of our cultural sector. I know this because I used to be one – for over a decade I was an independent curator. I loved the variety and autonomy of portfolio working, and seeing my input make a difference in boosting the impact of projects with a social purpose.

Our thirst for enriching cultural experiences could not be fulfilled without the dedication of a whole range of freelancers working across art-forms, including artists, producers, technicians, and more.

The life of a freelancer can be incredible fulfilling, but it comes with its pitfalls. I lived through many of the challenges that freelancers today experience everyday: cashflow on the edge, chasing late invoice payments from clients, and the constant pressure that downtime in-between contracts brings.

As Director for Individual Practitioners, I want to harness our collective lived experience to help bring about change. It’s why I am excited to be driving the Arts Council’s vision for creative and cultural practitioners.
